For those of you who loved watching Mr Bean, this movie doesn't fail to
disappoint you. I saw this last night and laughed my head off, in fact, I
think I was laughing more than when I was seeing Johnny English(also
starring Atkinson). For those who really love the TV series, a few of the gags have been redone,
including the vomit bag joke, the turkey head and the fast ride (the latt...

There are very few films that attempt to realistically describe life after
the bomb. If it is a Hollywood production, there has to be an optimistic
ending - take "the day after" with a simple but uplifting message: some will
die, there will be personal tragedy, yes - but we'll make it under the
guidance of our government. This film takes a different approach: the format (animated) a...

Starring: Peter Cushing, John Mills, Anne Baxter, Ray Milland, Anton Diffring, ...

Above all else, this TV movie was most welcome for giving Peter Cushing a
chance to end his acting career on a high note and in one of his most
celebrated roles (he appeared in one more film after this one but this was
to be the last lead role of his long career). He'd first played Sherlock
Holmes twenty-five years previously in a Hammer movie, and then in a 1968
BBC televisio...

I was never really crazy about the Hitchcock version of this story. Hitch
too often "fiddled" with an original story, and although so often made a
great movie, it was seldom true to the story as it was first written. The
later remake with Kenneth Moore, was a little more glossy, but flat. But
with this version, we finally get the story as it was written. Superior
photography o...

Just recently I found a video store in New Haven County where fine old
westerns can be had on VHS. One of the ones I had long wanted to see
was "CHUKA" or Chuka: the Gunfighter, from 1967.The video transfer was high quality and so watching this movie on tape
was an enjoyable experience. Luciana Paluzzi is stunningly beautiful.Indeed, Chuka is something of a Hollywood fantasy but the to...

IMBD refused to post this in the "Trivia" section, so I'll add it as a
comment: note that throughout the film, the men are often shirtless;
however their pants and shorts are always carefully tailored to cover their
navels, like Barbara Eden's harem-pants in "I Dream of
Jeannie".If you have access to the DVD, it is very well worth it to watch the
special-features documentaries...

Genres: Drama    History    War

Starring: John Mills, Robert Urquhart, Ray Jackson, Meredith Edwards, Anthony Nicholls, ...

A simple film, two stories, soldiers and civilians who did what needed to
be
done. None of the romance of "Mrs Minnever," but moving
nonetheless.I appreciated this film all the more for having seen "Pearl Harbor" a few
months ago. I gave "Dunkirk" 8/10, maybe a little generous, because of the
attention to detail and accuracy. The acting was better than adequate, and
it was ...

I must confess to being biased towards this film, as I am a grandson of
the author and screenwriter. It is extremely pleasing to read that this
film has given a lot of pleasure to many who have seen it. Why I think
the film succeeds is because it was written by a man who took part in
the North African campaign, as a doctor in the RAMC, who had to deal
with the human cost of war...

This is a brilliant Naval film. The failed midgit submarines, that caused
heavy casualties, when attepmting to sink the so called "Unsinkable"
Tirpitz. John Mills plays the part of a captain very well, in the struggle
to prove them, and then failing. With Lyndon Brook, and Lee Patterson to,
it
makes a great movie. Deffintaly worth seeing!...

From a movie I had absolutely never heard of, Hobson's Choice has quickly
flown to the top third of my all-time favorite film list. I happened upon
this little gem by doing a Charles Laughton search in the video data bank of
our university library computer system. I had been hoping we might have The
Hunchback of Notre Dame. We didn't, but we DID have this wonderful period
comed...

Few directors have ever matched David Lean's ability to bring great literary
works to life on film, and this is one of his best productions. The Dickens
novel itself is so good that even routine film adaptations of it are usually
quite watchable, but this version is exceptional, with atmosphere, settings,
photography, and characters that do full justice to the original. From the<...

My French teacher, a Lancaster Pilot, used to say there were two films
which recreated WWII for him with almost uncanny realism. "Appointment
in London" was one of them but this was certainly the other. It's
release on DVD is long, long overdue.Unlike many of the films about the air war, this one never leaves the
ground. It opens with a magnificent tracking shot, almost as long ...

This movie is all about reality, submarine warfare in WW2 was not a clean
precise science. There were no computers giving exact enemy details, there
was no precise instrumentation to 100% control the sub. Not all the crew
went to fight with a song in their heart, and a smile on their
dial.People with expectations of seeing a "pretty war" in this movie will be
grossly disappoint...

"In Which We Serve" is not only a wonderful pastiche of British society
during the second world war, but a complex, yet correct statement of a
very simple theme -namely the duty of a country's citizens to defend
the system it believes in. The simplicity of the story is one of the
movie's key strengths, but the most appealing aspect of the film is,
for me at least, the w...
