Ok, it's a given that you cannot make a good movie from a good book. (Unless you make it a trilogy :-) But comparing the book Corelli's Mandolin to this movie it's clear how much has to be cut to fit a screenplay. The book is very funny in places, romantic (of course), dramatic. What's left of it in the film is inexplicable romance -- as other reviewers have remarked,

This fine adaptation of Homer's epic tale is superbly directed by Andrei Konchalovsky and is one of the best adaptations of Greek mythology ever captured on screen. Effectively cast throughout, the acting honours must surely go to Armand Assante who shines as Odysseus creating not your stereotypical 'sword and sandal' hero but an older, wiser and intelligent warrior king who endu...

When "Bloodline" was released in 1979, a major magazine review pointed out that in the course of the story, ostensibly for failure to pay a gambling debt, a character's knees are nailed to the floor. What really struck me was that wh...

A great play by Maxwell Anderson, history, a wonderful cast, magnificent production values and 10 "Oscar" nominations. What more could you ask for. Producer Hal Wallis assembled some of Great Britain's greatest talent at the time, and it shows.Richard Burton has the role of a lifetime and he is great. His Henry VIII wants a male heir and his eyes are set on Anne. He is randy, r...

Wow - I used to think "Guns Of Navarone" was a try-hard, almost-there type of near-classic war film that had muffled sound, used a bad coloring process, was poorly lit, was limited by budget and the technology of the time. Boy, was I WRONG - I had seen this film several times, all on conventional/cable TV, VHS and even Laserdisc prior to the recent UCLA restoration now out on D...
