When I saw "House of Flying Daggers" in the theater, I was disappointed
because the image quality was dull and fuzzy. I happy to say that those
problems have been fixed in the DVD release and that "House of Flying
Daggers" is one of the most beautiful films of all time.

Zhang Yimou has elevated the kung-fu film to the beauty and grandeur of
ballet. He has brought sweeping romantic passion back to the screen,
long after Hollywood has forgotten how or given up. The special effects
are more spectacular and more convincing than "Star Wars," "The
Matrix," or "Lord of the Rings."

Despite the great visuals, the film does have some flaws. In
particular, the last half hour tends to drag and the whole plot line
about The Flying Daggers is dropped in favor for the love triangle
subplot. The dialog is stiff and stilted but it is no worse than "Star
Wars."

Despite those flaws, "House of Flying Daggers" is a film that should
not be missed..

If you are looking for a visual experience beyond the average and like
beautiful realistic scenes, that is nature, natural colours, Chinese
colourful art, sure this movie has it, both in the planned and arranged
scenes and in the chosen parts of nature in it's finest, and the way
the cameras are put to use from all angles. This film would be given 10
by me on those grounds isolated, because it is stunning, enchanting in
the visual aspect.

However, I only rank this film 8 because though it is very well made
and a quite good story, and well beyond average film-making, the
introduction, plot with surprises and climaxing in this film is a bit
too conventional, the theme of it is nothing new, though it is a
powerful story and very good acting, I like Ziyi Zhang very much, and
she shows some new aspects of her great range in this movie. I am
amazed of what this young woman can her age considerated..
