As a fan of the stage musical, I was worried that the film might not
measure up - but they hit this one out of the ballpark! Bright, bouncy
and joyously hilarious! A big smile hit my face as soon as it started
and I didn't stop grinning until the end of the credits.
I haven't heard a press screening audience applaud after musical
numbers since "Chicago" - and they cheered! The huge cast is uniformly
terrific. Travolta, Pfeiffer and Walken are a hoot and Nikki Blonsky
couldn't be more perfect.
The performances, script, lyrics, sight gags and costumes wage an
all-out assault on your funny bone. Even the set dressing gets laughs!
This is the movie musical that Grease, Rent and Dreamgirls should have

Most of the casting in this movie is spot on, but I just can't stand John Travolta as Edna Turnblad. He smirks and minces through the whole thing, and changes his voice to try to sound more like a woman. And I like John Travolta in most things. His performance cannot measure up to the standard set by Divine in the original film, or Harvery Fierstein in the Broadway musical. Zac Efron was so good as Link, and Queen Latifah kills it as usual as Motormouth... but I just can't bring myself to watch the movie again. I'd have to miss half the movie fast forwarding through all the John Travolta parts!.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS DAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????/.
I saw this film when it was reeased in the cinema and don't think me and my friends enjoyed a film that we all liked as we normally disagree. However i think that the storyline along with songs and John Travolta as a woman make it a great film to watch with friends or family. .
great movie fun and entertaining..
i really loved the movie.
Let it be known I approached this movie as a Hairspray snob. I love the
John Waters original, and have seen the stage musical five times. This
movie version hits all the right notes. I've seen it three times now,
and all considered it is well worth an A+ in my opinion.
The first time I saw it, it was more like an A-, but on subsequent
viewings I became more accustomed to the departures it took from the
stage version, and also was able to understand some dialogue I didn't
catch the first time. I have scrutinized this movie for imperfections,
and if they are there, they've gotten past me.
Highlights include: Every single cast member; excellent use of the
Dynamites; choreography faithful to the stage version; cutting between
Latifah and Pfeiffer in "Big, Blonde & Beautiful"; new song "New Girl
in Town"; and an ending that's different from the stage version. Stay
for the credits to hear the songs cut from the play. Better yet, see
the stage version when you have a chance for a different but equally
