Not about Texas....
This is the worst movie Joshua Jackson has ever been associated with.
The budget must have been donated by the local Dairy Queen. Acting was really bad. Josh needs to stick to his normal accent. He did not even get close to pulling off Texas slang. I found myself laughing at the movie, not because of it. The title suggests a Lone Star State of Mind???? The characters besides wearing a cowboy hat did not represent Texas or the Texan state of mind on any level. The only thing good about this movie was Jaime King. Earl is engaged to his step-sister Baby. Baby has entrusted him to take care of her misfit cousin Junior. Baby is also intent on leaving Texas for LA on Tuesday. When Junior and his recently released ex-con friend Tinker rob a pizza delivery boy and end up with $20,000 of drug money Earl is forced onto the scene, giving up his and Baby's LA money to save Juniors limbs.

In sports, they have "most improved" and "comeback player" awards, yet
the academy awards do not recognize actors for "most transformed". Although enjoyable, actors such as Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, and Hugh Grant play generally the same character. Ryan Hurst goes from the strong, man-of-few-words, football star in "Remember the Titans" to the character Tinker in Lone Star State of Mind and steals every scene. Maybe the award could be named after Meryl Streep, who, well enough said. Hurst's performance alone is worth watching this movie, but add in the rest of the characters that figuratively and literally feel no pain, with a very funny script, and you will watch this movie repeated times. Having a category just for comedies, especially black comedies like this one, would be such a welcome change to the movie industry blockbuster junk. Having Tinker win an Oscar; Charlie Chaplin would have understood that.. |
