Bewitched
Rather than simply remaking the popular 1960s television show of the
same name, the modern film version of Bewitched focuses on the making of a remake of said show. A self-centered star actor Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) is planning to star in the new show as Darrin Stephens and wants an unknown actress to portray his magically skilled on-screen wife Samantha. He happens to spot a perfect girl named Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman) in a book store and promptly convinces her to accept the role despite her lack of acting experience. There is a catch though: unbeknownst to everyone, Isabel is a real witch who would prefer to live a normal life without her magical powers. What follows is comical scheming, magical plot twists and perhaps a budding romance between the two stars. Even though the premise sounds promising and the show business jokes and references are amusing, the film ultimately fails due to the over-eager acting and general lack of subtlety. Kidman and Ferrell play their roles in such an exaggerated manner that it is very hard to actually care about what happens to them. Isabel is silly, naive and fussy while Jack constantly rants about himself like an impulsive maniac; I understand this is the way the characters are supposed to be, but I found the over-the-top performances more annoying than funny. It is also very difficult to see how Isabel and Jack could ever succeed as a couple as Ferrell and Kidman have little chemistry between each other a major flaw in a rom-com, even considering the theme of "love conquers all" and all that jazz. Luckily most of the supporting actors suit their roles better than the stars. Michael Caine is his usual charismatic self as Isabel's father Nigel, and Shirley MacLaine also keeps her flamboyant antics under control as Jack and Isabel's co-star on the show. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Steve Carell's small role as Uncle Arthur; he truly gives the most irritating performance I've seen in quite a while. I've never seen the original Bewitched series, so I cannot tell if there are many references to it besides the obvious parodying. The film version is not completely hopeless and will probably find its fans who don't mind all the bumbling, but all in all I feel the filmmakers should have just trusted their material without burying it under laughable exaggeration. Perhaps more focus on film industry jokes, such as Jack's past movie flops, could have made the style more appealing, but now I can't really recommend the movie to anyone but the biggest and most patient fans of the stars and noisy farcical comedies.. UnWitched
This was the WORST movie I have seen since in a long time. It left me
speechless. Where do I start? I tell you, at the start. Why would she need to rent a house from an agent if she found one she liked? Who lived there, did she zap them away? What was with the ridiculous signs? That set the pace for this unfunny movie. What a waste talent all over the place and what was with Kidman's handi-pandi voice? Did the director ask for that? I guess Kidman needs to make some money after making films like Dogville and Birth. Both excellent films, but I hear the pays not so good. Of course the true culprit is Will Ferrell. When will we learn this guy is not an Actor? We are supposed to believe he is a Hollywood Action Actor that had a few bad films? Give me a break! But is his defense, I don't think any actor could of fixed this script. P-U! If you enjoyed this film, may I suggest "Cut-throat Island"!. |
