The Stand
I enjoyed both the book (uncut) and the movie. My daughter and I (both
King fans) have read it several times and we both saw the flick first. As with most movies based on books, there are some differences, mainly omissions, some of which I think detract from the movie. Other character contractions (Rita & Nadine, for example) shorten the story "for TV" but do cut out some vital preliminaries & character complexities that are important to what follows next. Are there plans afoot to remake the movie? I would agree with some comments I've read here about making it longer. They did that with DUNE, and although I enjoyed the first version, I really liked the newer, longer version better because it went into more of the sub plots, etc. Any remake of The Stand should also, in my humble opinion, retain the religious undertones of the book because that is what all the parts of the entire story focus toward - the ultimate showdown between Good and Evil, as it were. Yes, the fact that Flagg's persona survives is also vital to the story. Evil endures, and Good must always be vigilant. Anyway, that's my take on it. If they wanted to simply "complete" the existing version, couldn't they use computer animations to create images of the original characters and then just fill in the "missing scenes"? That way the original actors images could still be used, their revamped parts played using life-like graphics.. jerry1844 watch Wind Chill movie

For me, better than the book
The Stand is not one of my favorite King novels. I thought the original
version was about 300 pages too long and would have benefited by about that amount being deleted. Then, they go and make it longer. I am a die-hard King fan. I think he's the best author of our day. His character development and attention to detail is fantastic. In my opinion, works like IT, Salem's Lot, Children of the corn, The Shining, all are better than The Stand. Therefore, I thought that this movie, with the necessary deletions due to time constraints is actually better than the book. It does a good job of focusing on the main events and characters and bringing them to the forefront which I felt the book didn't always do.. |
