Average premise, but the actors make it work
I'll tell you one thing: Hollywood sure likes its fat suits. They're
about the most unconvincing make-up effect in movie history, but hell they do make me laugh. Then again, they also make the actor look he's melting. Anyway, this movie relies mostly on the "we've all been there" factor, which is fine by me. This plot has been used so many times it isn't really that thrilling anymore, but these characters are in fact pretty well-written. Ryan Reynolds just does his usual likable douche routine, but it has never really fit in as well as in this movie. He's annoying, but he ought to get the girl anyway because secretly he's also a nice guy. Amy Smart is just plain and simple a good actress who as far as I am concerned can get away with a lot, even with this rather formulaic romantic comedy. The supporting cast steals the show though, Chris Marquette (who plays the little brother) actually gets to deliver most of the laughs. Anna Faris is also hysterical as the well, hysterical girl. And generally I never really comment that much about soundtracks, but I firmly believe Fountains Of Wayne can make any movie just a tad bit better. Slap-stick wanna-be fiasco.
It was funny, I give it that. But is was also rude and gross and
repulsive at the same time. I only watched it because of Ryan Reynolds and I have to say now that I am swearing off any off his pre-2005 stuff because it seems now that it took Hollywood a while to notice his talent and thus he starred in a lot of crap before his big break. This one is no exception. There's even a girl in this film that looks like Britney Spears (in a dead-on spoof) but neither her funny stint nor Chris Klein in a supporting role as a Casanova can save this over the top slap-stick wanna-be fiasco.. |
