Haunted House Joyride
I watch horror films regularly, act in them locally (I'm everyone's
favorite zombie to deal with on set--a "zombie leader", which is just
funny), grew up in Pittsburgh (littered with both haunted houses and
Romero), and both I and my hubby (same background, and also a
"professional zombie") loved this film.
I should also mention I'm an art director. I used to get teased by my
editor, "That's a film only an art director would love", which is often
true. But if you get a single actual scream out of me (which this film
did for what I call "breaking expectation of space"... no movie does
this more than the original The Eye, Hong Kong, 10/10), you win in my
Characters are "archetypes" but not in a annoying way. The whole story
is, but it's a lot of fun. I knocked it to a 9 for the
already-mentioned alcoholic-outta-nowhere bit. What was up with that?!
Had nothing to do with anything at all; it doesn't further the story.
I'm not going to over-analyze the "it's true" part at all nor compare
it to Amityville: if you take the film for what it is, it's simply a
highly-entertaining ghost-story joyride.
I defend this film on its own merits: good acting (not their fault if
the script sucks and they did admirably with it), fantastic horror
eye-candy, genuine scream, and a few more surprises..

a haunting in connecticut is a great movie.
the best movie ive ever ever seen ever.
one of the greatest.
People are blind if they think this is a return to the classics.
Apart from a few lovely jumpy moments I though this film was rubbish,
some good performances, the main Kid was quite good, but I've got to
say the editor certainly likes to tug his own nether regions.
Whats happened to the subtle horror, the horror that infected your soul
in the early seventies, generally silent, unnerving? The director tries
to hard if you ask me, as does the editor, bloody hell everyone! The
script was boring also and dare I say formulaic. Excuse me for saying
that word, formulaic, its thrown around too much, although it has a
truth, film scripts and indeed films, follow too many rules for me
For some reason they lack substance, like the film maker is trying to
emulate a film that has happened or inspired them before, to make it
successful, they're imagination is obviously far too shallow to find
and tell a story from within, they have to chase the fleeting imagery
of what could promote they're own success or what they've glimpsed on
The sound in this film really made me angry, that slowly slowing down
creaking boomy sound, it reminds me of a rave party, screeching strings
at intense moments, give me silence I say and you would have had me
melting in fear. Suggestion is the way to my heart in a good horror,
stop trying to be fancy! It had potential and if I really squinted my
eyes (and my ears) in this film I would say I enjoyed it, fantastic
production values, good use of shock but..I'm sorry to say...overdone
