Good "coming of age" film, way underrated.
What a collection of future stars. Although they had each been in several
prior films, the 8 main actors were all 20 to 26 years old - Emilio Estevez (22), Rob Lowe (20), Andrew McCarthy (22), Demi Moore (22), Judd Nelson (25), Ally Sheedy (22), Mare Winningham (25), and Andie McDowell (26). (An aside, I've always wondered what kind of parents would name their daughter "Mare"??) St. Elmo (or St Erasmus) was the patron saint of Mediterranian sailors, and St Elmo's Fire was the electrical discharge they would see at night coming from the tip of the mast during threatening weather. Legend has it that St Elmo's Fire would keep them safe and headed in the right direction until they reached their destination. In this film, it is used as a metaphor for these recent college graduates attempting to find their way into adulthood in love, careers, and other relationships. The bar where they frequently congregated was St Elmo's Bar. Lowe was married and had a child, but was not devoted to his young wife, he was constantly trying to quickie romance others, eventually got on the bus, bound for NYC, with his sax. Estevez was sweet on McDowell, now a doctor, and spent a good bit of his screen time trying to romance her, never successfully. Nelson and Sheedy lived together, he was unfaithful, but kept asking her to marry him. He thought it would make him an honest man. She wanted to establish a life and career first, eventually left him for his infidelity. Friends thought McCarthy was gay, but he had a secret crush on Sheedy, and when she and Nelson split, she had a brief fling with McCarthy. He was possessive, she wasn't really attached to him, they did not form a love affair. Moore was a coke-sniffing slut who spent more than she made, was having an affair with her married banking boss, got fired, and locked herself in the freezing apartment. All the friends rallied to her side to help her overcome this funk. Winningham was the homely-looking (not much of a stretch!) girl, who was still a virgin, until Lowe said, "Would you give me a going-away present?" She did. This is a good film because it pretty accurately dramatizes what young people go through during that period between college and settling down into their main life's routine. The good kind of routine, where we know what our values are, and live a solid, moral life. I can recall what I went through during that period in my life and, although mine did not resemble any of those in this film, it could have. There is no college course that prepares you for "life as an adult." You have to learn it as you go along, and you never really are sure you have it right. A fine film. Deserves about an "8" of 10 rating, comparing it to all the other films of the past 30-odd years.. nabilmita watch The Lost Boys movie

Why The 80s Sucked: Exhibit A - This Movie
I noticed "Fire" was on cable the other night and I began watching it
because I couldn't recall anything specific about it other than I remember it being a horrible film when I saw it back in '85. Twenty years later the film is still awful. Besides the synthesizer, the saxophone was the most abused instrument in pop music during the 1980s, as is evident in the title song. Hearing that song again made me want to jab a screwdriver in my ears to end the sonic misery inflicted upon them. And to compound this musical assault Rob Lowe's character played saxophone, and there was one scene where he played a solo that went on and on like he was Charlie Parker, only his shrill tone and playing were more reminiscent of a monkey playing a kazoo. All the characters were intensely unappealing, although I must say they did a great job of casting equally unappealing actors to portray them. Actually I thought Mare Winningham was appealing, and I initially felt sorry for her character because she wore funny underwear, but then near the end of the movie she decides to have sex with Rob Lowe's character who would probably be voted most likely to transfer a variety of sexual diseases if such thing were voted upon.. |
