Universial Solider: The Return isn't a good movie by any means, but
it's an entertaining one that's for sure, after all I enjoy my cheese
to the highest level. The actors never take themselves seriously here,
especially Goldberg who is terrible, but seems to be having a blast
with his role. The action is constantly there with Van Damme being
dependable as usual, the only thing I felt was cheesy was the obvious
wire work with the fight in the end between Van Damme and Jai White. It
never really explained in detail how Van Damme is fully human though,
and that only fuels the many plot holes it has, I really think they
should have gone with a direct sequel. The annoying soundtrack will be
a patience to anyone's ears, the heavy metal was truly god awful.
People tend to pick on this one a lot calling it one of the worst
movies ever made, I put this one in the category of Street Fighter,
good, clean and cheesy fun, besides it has Van Damme taking on Michael
Jai White, what more do you want?.

Performances. Jean-Claude Van Damme will never be known as the world's
greatest actor, but he's always had a natural charisma, and a
delightful presence. I think he knows how bad this movie is, but his
charisma and top-notch martial art skills make him a treat to watch.
Michael Jai White's performance isn't that great at all, but his skills
and his presence factor rank near the top. Heidi Schanz is no Ally
Walker, but she's cute and feisty, and her chemistry with Van Damme
seemed natural. Xander Berkeley is pretty much wasted. Kiana Tom is
pretty bad as Maggie, she had some very cheesy lines. Bill Goldberg is
on and off, fun at times, annoying at others, but it was never in doubt
that he was having fun.

Bottom line. I enjoy this movie, it's nothing more than pure cheese,
but a good kind of cheese, and in the end that's OK with me. Grab a
couple of beer, a few buddies, and have a blast!.

Well,

At the time, people were expecting a "proper", classic-looking
Universal Soldier sequel movie, closer to the original (which is a
supreme masterpiece of the nineties. Period). Maybe the TV movies are
way closer to the original than this one. Which is not necessarely a
bad thing. RETURN is just a different take. It has been revealed that
Universal Soldier 3 ('Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation', coming
out in 2009) will ignore the events and the continuity of this movie.
That makes it an "alternative story" of the Universal Soldier
mythology. Sort of "What If" parallel dimension or so.

Anyway: Van Damme delivers the best as a more human-like Luc Deveraux
(he still retains some UniSol abilities here, contrary to popular
belief). Terrific fight scenes. The UniSols 2005 look much more
nihilistic, all black'n'mean. When S.E.T.H. manages to implant itself
in a organic body, the "Super UniSol", that is a refreshing update.
Marvellous final fight. The story is good, not outstanding, but good
nonetheless.

This is a nice movie. Just a different take. With the upcoming
Universal Soldier movie, you're getting a more classic sequel. Rejoice.
