If you would have told me two years ago at the 2004 Academy Awards if
Best Actress-winner Hilary Swank's next big role would come in the form
of a scientist trying to save the world from biblical plagues, satanic
cults, and a really p***ed-off 12 year-old, I probably would have
slapped you across the face to make sure you weren't dreaming. Sadly
though , Swank's next big role has come in the form of a scientist
trying to save the world from biblical plagues, satanic cults, and
yes...a really p***ed-off 12 year-old. Hearing the words "Hilary Swank"
and "Biblical plagues" used in the same sentence to describe the plot
of a film terrified me enough. Things only turned for the worse when
the film was pushed back from it's original mid-2006 release date three
separate times. The finished product was reportedly "murky", "cheap",
and "silly" according to reports of early-2006 screenings, and I can't
say that the film has really improved on any of those aspects during
it's extra months in the editing room. No, it's not as bad as the
largely-negative rap it's getting upon it's release today, but let's
just say it's basically not going to win a third Oscar for Hilary.

The film has a seen-it-before yet oddly enticing premise, telling the
story of a woman named Katherine Winter (Swank), an ordained
minister-turned-scientist whom has been investigating "miraculous"
happenings and occurrences around the world and discrediting them
with...what else...scientific explanations. Katharine had lost her
faith because of some incident in Sudan that resulted in the death of
her husband and daughter, resulting in the loss of her faith, yada yada
yada. She has been called to a rural town in the deep-south to
investigate strange happenings...occurrences that are scarily similar
to the ten plagues before the Apocalypse.

Hilary Swank is enough to give you the chills with her amazing acting
ability and genuine bond with the characters she plays. Here, Hilary
makes what is a flat film, a surprisingly compelling one. without her
story the film Would be too typical to bear, and the use of religious
mythology would have come too thick and too fast.

So credit for making this outing swankier than your average Omen, but
for those looking for the next exorcist you won't find it. Prepare to
bring your own paranoia with you for what is quite a cheap thrill, but
if you jump on board the narrative and don't let your religious views
control your perception you'll stay easily entertained, and assuming
one has the lights off the atmosphere will create some scares,
guaranteed!.
