Some redeeming qualities, but largely nonsensical
The lead character, Tyler, has come to New York City after receiving a
frantic call for help from her sister Jessica. Tyler arrives and encounters a small group of enigmatic people who seem bent on keeping Jessica isolated. Much of this movie is taken up by a chase sequence that doesn't make any sense. Without giving away too much plot, I'll just say that running around downtown Manhattan in broad daylight, with a working cell phone and hundreds of people everywhere, trying to "hide" from a few individuals trying to kill you, really doesn't make any sense. Dial 911, find a cop (which isn't difficult in that area), or just start shouting "help", and your problem is most likely solved. The sunlight and the many obvious methods of salvation seriously hindered any suspense or thrill potential the movie had built up to that point. The acting was usually (but not always) decent, especially on the part of the beautiful lead. The camera and sound work were also decent. The artsy editing style and focus effects got annoying at times, but it would be naive to go into a New York indie film without expecting such things..
Bad editing, good script, average acting
Awaiting something in the neighborhood of Breaking Dawn, I must admit I
was disappointed. Not from Kellys acting, although she at times had some trouble too. But then, you can't lead the movie all by yourself. The rest was, I have to say, pathetic. The villain should focus on some expressive acting. I mean, where's a Malkovich when you need one, right? And I'm still trying to understand why somebody gave this movie a prize for editing, no offense. For instance, look at the scenes between Kelly and the bad girl (don't remember her name, doesn't matter) at the nice guys place. Mirror in the back, distracting, hit without blood (and the punch was dubbed close to a Rocky's cross, after all, it's a movie, we are talking hyper-reality here, people). Then the guy from behind chloroforming her (and that passing out was really bad, too, sorry Kelly). Can you see him in one scene, then not, then again? I mean, did any of the staff actually watch the movie after it was finished? And don't talk to me about budget, either. I think the Blairwitch Project went on an even lower budget, and it was freaky, followed by a sequel, and rocked the Hollyworld to a completely new movie experience level.. |
