Naked is rather an excellent film but don't expect to come away from it
without something to think about later. Johnny is a motor-mouthed
cynical philosophic drifter, who flees Manchester for London after
raping a young woman and looks up an old girlfriend. After a brief stay
at where she lives he's out and about on the streets of London having
various conversations and mini-relationships with folks on the fringe
of society and life, and after a severe beating he manages to find his
way back to his ex-girlfriends place. And meanwhile back at the ranch
his ex-girlfriend and one of her roommates seem to have a problem with
some sociopathic type that seems to be their landlord, and he's not a
particularly nice guy as he's already violently raped Sophie and seems
content to hang around and terrorize them. Now Johnny himself is rather
an amusing character at times with plenty of snide remarks, and he's
highly critical of other's lives and dreams while seemingly having none
himself. Now, Johnny's ex has told him that she's going to go back to
Manchester and will pay for him to go too, and then she leaves for
work, and Johnny finds himself tempted by a large wad of money sitting
on a table (for Sophie, for services rendered, says the loony landlord)
and takes to the streets although he's barely able to walk. Quite
frequently Johnny mentions that mankind has no future and that man will
cease to exist in 1999 so I guess he doesn't feel the need to do much
of anything with his life. Nothing matters, really, just do what one
has to, to survive, and wait, I guess. Not exactly your "feel good"
kind of movie, but very interesting and well worth seeing for the
adventurous. But not for the "blockbuster movie" contingent. 8 out of
10..

This movie is not everbody's cuppa but I loved it, funny and dark at the same time. Great performances by everyone especially David Thewlis who pretty much carries the movie. None of the characters are particularly admirable - even the main character is sometimes revolting - so you might be put off by that but if you don't mind darker movies then you should check this out. One of the best films of 1993..

seen, much better than the caricatures on display in other Mike Leigh films
like Secrets and Lies or Life is Sweet. Johnny is one of the great
anti-heroes of British cinema..
