Two Hours And Forty Minutes
Endless, unbearable. Italian actors overacting shamelessly and Spike
Lee losing track of his own talents. The self indulgence mixed with the confusion made this "epic" one of the most difficult films to sit through in long, long time. During my visit to Los Angeles I was invited to a few screenings but this one was the one I longed for. Terrible let down. It's been a long time since "Do The Right Thing" and I have the feeling that it has to do with Spike Lee's vision of himself as a filmmaker. There is a lack of humility that blurs everything he does and "Miracle At St Anna" is a perfect example of that. In a way "The Inside Man", his genre commercial outing, was more honest and disciplined than anything his done of late. I can't imagine this film making any money so maybe Mr Lee will have the space to reflect. I certainly hope so because I'm sure he still has some aces up his sleeve.. 
This is quite possibly the worst movie i have ever seen
This movie is something that should never have been produced. It is
what happens when you allow a director who just wants to say "white people suck" make an attempt at something serious. The plot starts off actually well. A guy shoots a guy and and they find a the head of an Italian statue in his his closet... this being the only clue as to why he actually killed the guy. Honestly, it is a great hook. What happens after this is where the movie goes to hell. From about 30 minutes onward until the end one basically is subjected to 2.5 hours of absolute crap. You the viewer will basically watch a pathetic mockery of band of brothers / saving private ryan in Italy all with a big blubbering black guy who I frankly think would look more appropriate in Eddie Murphy style drag. For two and a half grueling hours you will watch this character cry, mollycoddle, and otherwise pine over a mildly retarded Italian boy. That is it. That is the entire movie. Except, oh did I forget, this movie is a political statement. Did you know that black people were once oppressed in America? I did, but if i was going to make a movie about it I would have made it a damn site more subtle than this idiot did. Seriously though, by the end I wanted the Nazi's to win. I really hope this guy never gets a chance to direct again. I mean I'm sorry to all the black film maker supporters out there who support the man because of his race, but this movie truly is an abomination.. |
