This movie was a major letdown after all the hype it received. It had a
decent plot, but the writing was terrible. It appeared Dir. Spike Lee
had no military advisers whatsoever or he chose to ignore them. The
miracle was so subtle I didn't know what it was until I read other
people thoughts on it online. I'm not completely convinced the statue
head was supposed to be part of it because one of the soldiers died
while holding it.
One of things that annoyed me the most about the script was Renata's
character. When she is first introduced, she is a typical good Italian
woman helping the four black soldiers as much as she can. She has a
husband who is an Italian soldier and is not around. She is constantly
being hounded by the always horny Bishop and it seems to bother her.
All of a sudden, wham bam, she becomes a completely different character
and sleeps with him; he is the most ignorant character in the whole
movie with the exception of the bigot Battalion commander. It totally
ruined her image and when she gets caught afterwards she doesn't seem
to care. Horrible script! There many other things that didn't make
since, but I'm tired of thinking of this movie..
lac.jkt watch Saving Emily movie
good movie and good action.
Major Let Down
This story had a lot of potential. Overall I was very let down by the
film. The terminology in the script was not 1940s. The score/music was
terrible. I actually had to force myself to watch it without falling
asleep. The beginning and end were interesting, but the 80% middle part
was just terrible. The acting was bad and the war battle scenes were
too overly dramatic. And as usual, being a Spike Lee movie, you had to
put up with the 'all white people are racist' song and dance. It would
have been better to show a more accurate historical aspect to black
soldiers that served in WWII.
Spike Lee's movies have really been a let down lately. Based on the
financial flop this movie has thus far proved to be, I'd say Spike
won't be making a movie for quite a while..
