One of the most moving films I have ever seen...
This was an incredibly moving film that surprisingly avoided the typical
black and white set of labels our society tends to force upon us while
growing up, and in its place, created a character, Bobby, who simply
wanted to love and be loved regardless of gender. This theme is
absolutely brilliant because it presents love at its most cherished and
most real form: when gender does not matter. However, one might say
that the love in Bobby's heart was created by tragedy in his family.
Even if this is the case, it was so real and so beautiful, I often
found myself in awe at a person this simple and wonderful. Bobby's
sexuality was not concrete, but he certainly loved both Jonathan and
Claire for the love they gave him.

On the contrary to the criticism over Colin Farrell being miscasted, I
think he did an extraordinary job with this dramatically more sensitive
and emotional role than those in which we are used to seeing him. His
extremely good looks and persona were perfect for the character of
Bobby. Sissy Spacek was also superb as Jonathan's mother. I loved the
pot smoking scene where Bobby got her to try it! I also found the
scenes where Bobby and Jonathan danced together to be overwhelmingly
touching. It would be every gay man's dream! Farrell was adorable
throughout the entire movie, especially during these scenes. The
coverage of the different stages of the characters' lives were
excellent. The teenage years experimentation phase could not have been
acted any better. However, I was not thrilled with AIDS being thrown
into the picture, and felt the movie could have done without that same
gay theme that has been in too many movies with gay characters. I would
have liked to have seen a love seen between Jonathan and Bobby towards
the end.

Overall, though, beautiful movie with tremendous substance. One could
analyze the characters' feelings forever!.

A Home at the End of the World (2004)

This is such an idealistic and yet realistic tale, set in real places,
with real joys and tragedies, it will certainly get under your skin. I
can see that some might find it maudlin, or there might be a sense of
playing loose with the rules, but for me there are no rules when it
comes to being as good as you can be, and there is a long distance from
deeply felt to maudlin. This is deeply felt.

And very well acted and written. All of the principles are disarming at
times, they are so convincing. And it really is a big beautiful world
when you do your best to make the most of it. Don't miss this one, and
keep an open mind. It grows as it goes, and the earlier fragments gel
and the story streamlines and solidifies, but it really needs those
earlier pieces to give it depth, and to set it in time..
