An animation with all the right ingredients
The Plot The story revolves around the basic plot of Little Red Riding
Hood but it delves deeper into a whodunit mystery.
The story is told from different perspectives: Red (Red Riding Hood's
name in the film), Granny, the Wolf and the Woodsman. Each character
has a unique personality.
Did you know that Red did martial arts or that Granny had a secret life
in extreme sports? Did you know that the Wolf was a reporter or that
the Woodsman was dreaming of becoming an actor?
The film ties all the characters and the plot up well and even delves
into another mystery surrounding the neighbourhood.
The Pros Hoodwinked has all the ingredients that a successful CGI
animated film needs: It has humor for children and adults,
exceptionally memorable characters, a tight, clever plot, brilliant
voice casting and original animation. Sure the animation isn't as good
as Pixar or DreamWorks but it is still really well done.
The Cons There was nothing that I didn't like about Hoodwinked.
Did you know? The sequel, Hood Vs. Evil will be released in 2008 and is
about a teen Red who is training in a land with a mysterious group
called Sisters of the Hood. The head of the Happily Ever After Agency
calls her up and she teams her with the Wolf to investigate the
disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. The character of Granny and the
rest of the Hoodwinked gang, also return and are joined by new
Final Word Hoodwinked is now one of my favorite CGI animated films. I
thoroughly enjoyed it, finding it filled with humor, mystery and
originality. I can't wait until the sequel, Hood vs. Evil..

Wit and Creativity triumph ...
Hoodwinked gets tromped because its animation isn't "cutting edge". I
guess I missed the memo-to-law that made the level of animation #1
criteria of whether an animated film has value or not; bumping story,
wit and cleverness out of first place.
If you read a lot you know that flawless execution of prose takes a
back seat to excitement and the joy of story. We forgive a lot if we
are entertained, whether we're reading fiction or non-fiction.
Same with film. Visually stunning special effects might rivet our eyes
to the screen (and if that is all we're after then it will suffice) but
did the film take us on that journey we want for that hour or two we
give up of our lives? Hoodwinked is an absolutely insane assault on a
fairy tale, turns it inside out, goes film noir, gets gritty, loves
atmosphere and thrives in a world of wit and clever.
To knock it because its animation isn't "cutting edge" is to miss the
reason we turn to these films when we could be mowing yards, attending
business or painting walls.
We want to be entertained, we want to laugh and have our clever meter
spike. We want a pleasant break from the drudgery of day to day.
It shines in "clever" particularly.
Can't find a negative in it.
