Very entertaining. Definitely worth seeing.
To me, the animation didn't seem to be quite state-of-the-art, but the
movie as a whole was very creative and entertaining. I loved it, as did my wife and my two children (ages 7 and 4). I think the PG rating is appropriate - I don't think it's quite a G, but neither did I have to give a whole lot of parental guidance. I certainly have no qualms about having taken my kids. Very enjoyable for all ages. The animation was good, just not the best I've seen. And I think it's FAR better to have a good story and a good script than to have eye-popping animation. We saw the Tulsa premier. We liked it enough that we will see it again in the theatres when it opens (per my children's insistence), and will buy it on DVD when it's available.. Wit and Creativity triumph ...
Hoodwinked gets tromped because its animation isn't "cutting edge". I
guess I missed the memo-to-law that made the level of animation #1 criteria of whether an animated film has value or not; bumping story, wit and cleverness out of first place. If you read a lot you know that flawless execution of prose takes a back seat to excitement and the joy of story. We forgive a lot if we are entertained, whether we're reading fiction or non-fiction. Same with film. Visually stunning special effects might rivet our eyes to the screen (and if that is all we're after then it will suffice) but did the film take us on that journey we want for that hour or two we give up of our lives? Hoodwinked is an absolutely insane assault on a fairy tale, turns it inside out, goes film noir, gets gritty, loves atmosphere and thrives in a world of wit and clever. To knock it because its animation isn't "cutting edge" is to miss the reason we turn to these films when we could be mowing yards, attending business or painting walls. We want to be entertained, we want to laugh and have our clever meter spike. We want a pleasant break from the drudgery of day to day. Hoodwink succeeds. It shines in "clever" particularly. Can't find a negative in it. Bravo.. |
