Very funny, but....
Here is a terrific CGI animated film from the UK that is beautiful
visually and easy to enjoy and has a really unique pitch: WW2 fighter pigeons and rah rah Brit derring do, but has seriously miscast main voice actors: especially Ricky Gervais and Ewan MacGregor. Gervais's annoying babble and rant is so tedious it almost overtakes the film, and MacGregor does not have an animated voice. It is too ordinary. However everything else and everyone else seem right and the wartime miniature visuals are very inventive. The French resistance mouse is hilarious. It was a complete surprise to me as I avoided it on first release and only saw it as a DVD. well recommended for 10 years olds and if you can get past the Gervais nonsense patter you will love it entirely. Reminders of A BUGS LIFE and RATATOUILLE and even HAPPY FEET will emerge as you watch but VALIANT is so funny and well planned it easily stands on it's own.. emilywattles watch Ghost movie

It's okay...but I liked it alot....
Much underrated, resourceful, witty - in one word: recommended
I only saw this movie yesterday and I must say it is hugely underrated.
The story is very resourceful, funny, witty and interesting, the characters are well-written and I personally find it really refreshing after having seen many technically convincing animation movies without a really original details in the story (like Monsters vs Aliens last time, e.g.). By the way, the animation is also great here, especially the development of the characters, the fascinating English landscapes and buildings or the stormy sea and the warships, which are formidable. The cast of voices is hilarious, Ewan McGregor, Hugh Laurie, Ricky Gervais or Jim Broadbent, just to mention a few. Finally, what I really liked about Valiant is that it lacks any form of "wanting to be cool", it doesn't have the arrogant self-righteous, self-reflective tone I find nowadays with many animation pieces. Taking place during the Second World War, it is a great tale which is not barely the figment of the creators' imagination, so this makes it even more worthwhile to see. The music is also authentic and my favourite, but even if it's not yours, I'm sure this film has enough virtues to be seen by the young or the older ones as well. I've downgraded it by 1 star only because I found the burping jokes a bit too excessive at one point, but otherwise, it's highly recommended.. |
