This is one of the worst slashers I've seen in a while. I have never
seen the original Black Christmas and I probably won't ever see it.
There are so many problems with this one.

*Spoiler Alert*

- The death scenes are stupid and repetitive. It's mostly putting a
plastic bag over someone's head and stabbing them with icicles. Some of
the deaths were creative.

- The acting is horrendous but that is what you and I should expect
from most horror films.

- There was so much gore and it wasn't needed. Some of the deaths they
weren't creative with were off camera or blocked by objects such as a
car windshield covered in snow and just had blood spraying everywhere.

- The character development was pretty poor. You don't know much about
the girls but you are explained throughout the film how the killers got
to where they are, where the originated from, what their childhoods
were like, etc. At least I get to know the killers' backgrounds.

- The movie wasn't scary or suspenseful. It was very predictable. You
could tell when everyone was going to die. It made the movie boring.

I give this movie 1 star out of 10. This was really bad!.

black christmas is goood for christmas day.

One thing that is present in just about every remake of a Horror
classic is an increase in on screen violence and other forms of
vulgarity. The original 'Halloween' and 'The Amityville Horror'
eschewed the blood and gore in favor of suspense, atmosphere, and
subtle shocks and very effectively. Now don't get me wrong here, I love
the Horror films that embrace the nastiness too, but when remaking a
film that was just fine without it you'd think the filmmakers would
stay true to that. I saw 'Black Christmas' later in life and after
seeing it and the trailer for this update I was more than a little
excited. Even the negative reviews and poor Box Office couldn't keep me
away. To my dismay the film was not all that great, at least that's how
I felt the first time I saw it. Since then the film has grown on me and
though I still think it inferior to the masterpiece that is the 1974
original, on its own it's a fun slasher flick that reminds you of ones
from the 1980s.

Pros: The acting is quite good considering the actors aren't given a
lot to do. The kills are plenty, intense, and gory. There's plenty of
that gore too. Writer/directed Glen Morgan creates a really dark and
spooky atmosphere. Good twisted humor. Beautiful to look at thanks to
the cinematography and many colorful and festive decorations. Moves at
a fine pace. An interesting backstory, not to mention disturbing. Kudos
to the filmmakers for making this remake faithful enough to the
original, while still making it it's own movie. An exciting finale.

Cons: Lacks the suspense and subtlety of the original. Characters are
underdeveloped and some unlikable. Though interesting, the use of a
backstory for the killer eliminates the mystery. Some things carried
over from the original that were effective in it aren't so much here.
Some plot holes.

Final thoughts: The remake of the beloved Horror classic really has
more in common with the 'Silent Night, Deadly Night' series. That's not
to say it isn't fun to watch, it's just in a totally different league
than it's predecessor. That film is subtle, suspenseful, and has depth
whereas this remake is gory, demented, and often over the top. Being a
remake of a film like that you'd think they wouldn't go this route. To
be fair, the producers and studio called for re-shoots and editing that
were against the director's wishes, which would explain some of the
film's faults. Doesn't change the fact that the film is a lot of fun to
watch, especially with friends at Christmas time.
