Most Charming
Ignore even the favorable reviews of this film that suggest some
mystical or mythological significance. If the makers of the film intended such it surely escaped me. You don't need to know that Ondine is some German sea legend: Any background with fishermen pulling magical things from the deep will do just fine. This movie works magic of its own. The beauty of the film is fisherman Circus' compromise with what's happened. Our hero is no fool. He does not choose to believe the fairy tale regarding the lover that came from his nets. No, he does not even decide to suspend belief. Rather, it's his almost palpable decision that joy and happiness don't come around often -if at all- and that Life is too short to look a gift horse in the mouth. In this regard, Circus' banter with his daughter Annie, who may or may not truly believe in legends, appears like a simple compromise; e.g., "Why ask questions? We don't NEED an answer anyway!". The characters, small town setting and dialog are just perfectly low key. There is subtle joy without evident emotion. There is hardship without complaining or crying. There is communication with few words or long conversations. And not to be overlooked is the physical beauty of a small town by the sea. Indeed we see the same landscapes and streets throughout, until we are living there too. My only criticism is that the ending, the "intrusion", is a bit harsh. Granted such had to be something in stark contrast to a fairy tale. Nor can I conceive of a better plot devise and, in hindsight, its a contemporary and believable circumstance. I'll shut up then. ONDINE favorably compares with 1983's LOCAL HERO and the recent LARS AND THE REAL GIRL. The former is set in a Scottish sea village while the latter concerns a protagonist's suspension of belief regarding his lover's reality. Those movies mine more humor, those the charm factor carries all three. Start with ONDINE. See all three!. irc11 watch 2 Fast 2 Furious movie

Romanian immigrant girl involved in smuggling drugs into Ireland!
As a Romanian citizen I am profoundly disappointed to learn half way through the movie that what started off as an intriguing fantasy about a mermaid fished out the water by an Irish fisherman shockingly turns out into a story about a Romanian immigrant girl involved in smuggling drugs into Ireland, who also has to marry the fisherman to become a national. Problem#1 is that Romania has been in the E.U. since 2007 and the movie is dated 2009...Problem #2 is that the Romanian girl is in fact a Polish actress who speaks no Romanian in the movie. Problem #3 her PIMP is indeed a Romanian actor who speaks Romanian during some of his parts, but none of that was translated into English. Problem #4: why Romania again for the bad ass country image? Are move makers not tired of this? Conclusion: waste of time, waste of money & if I knew how I would file a complaint for all of the above problems in my position of a Romanian EU citizen! . |
